We are in the throes of planning and the schools are due to present their first cut detailed plans next week. It's a key opportunity to embed the KT message and mission but getting it focussed, practical and achievable is always a problem. Has anyone any thoughts on practical steps to help translate the central startegy into practical reality in the schools?

One way I've had success with in the past is to ask schools to think about their recruitment targets for proportion of new learners coming from, say, local companies e.g. in part time mode. Linking KT strategy to recruiting students from local busiensses is a tangible way schools can see benefit. The number might be small but it helps schools think about segmenting their markets, using a range of recuitment options and using KT function as one of those

This is a good example of linking KT to the core teaching/research agenda.
If we open up our sometimes narrow view of KT it becomes clear that much of the teaching activity is in fact KT.
From placements to case studies to dissertation ideas there are several core tasks that academics have to undertake which will benefit from KT input.
The strategy is to show how you can address these directly with your KT activity/plans.

remember students are the biggest KT activity and graduates are the main knowledge transfer to industry.

I agree with Richard. Our biggest KT comes from graduates applying their knowledge and thinking. We've introduced a 'live briefs' concept here where businesses provide a design problem/brief eg. a product design and students work on the solution with academics and the business. The business pays or gvies a prize to the best team solution. It's working becuase it's been embedded in the curriculum. Early days but encouraging.

We established a network of Kt associates,in each of our schools supported by a development programme (learning set) and small budget. To draw down the budget they needed to give a few bullet points as to their local priorities for E and kt development.
We also have a target for a KTP in each of our schools. At least it provoked a debate!
