Hi, At a recent discussion with colleagues about the use of metrics etc, we were debating the truism that "what you measure is what you get". Some of our Kt endeavours are about trying to generating an "ecosystem" for innovation, particulalry less linear appraoches to innovation. But how to measure???? Externally imposed outcome measures eg jobs created can be the kiss of death to some of our best new ideas......does anyone have any good ideas for this one?

Lots of debate around this and few solutions! I don't necessarily agree with measuring everything - it boxes people in to specific ways of thinking and acting which to some extent defeats the openess of innovation. I also have a farming background and their is a saying that 'Just becuase you weigh the pig more doesn't mean it' gets any fatter' I think at the strategic level you have to concentrate on evaluation starting with the highest level outcome ie. if it's economic prosperity you might see jobs as a key measure. If it's more innovation and system focussed - what do you want to see change to generate more creativity, more ideas generated, more potentail solutions to problems etc. We worry too much about measuring. 'Just do it' and make some mistakes is ok sometimes.
