HEIF

Context:

Internal:

Formulation of job roles in the Business Relations Unit.

External:

All organisations with which the College has links.

Objectives:

To give all organisations a single point of contact in Birkbeck for any kind of query with someone who is familiar with their sector.

To ensure all queries are followed through to a satisfactory response.

To allow long-term relationships to be developed between Birkbeck and external organisations.

To ensure market intelligence based on sector expertise informs development of services offered by Birkbeck.

Process:

The four Business Relations Officers are each dedicated to working with an external sector, not any particular School. These outward-facing roles are designed to make it easier for other organisations to access the College’s expertise and resources.

The four areas of responsibility are:

Arts and Culture; Business and Finance; Public and Voluntary; Science and Healthcare.

Critical success factors:

Number of CPD students sponsored by their employers and fee income from employer sponsors.

Outcomes: key concrete benefits for external beneficiaries:

Clients have a single named point of contact who will ensure they receive the information they need.

Clients talk to someone who is familiar with their sector.

Outcomes: key benefits for HEI:

Relationship between Birkbeck and the external organisation that can be developed beyond use of any particular service.

Co-ordination of different departments in Birkbeck working with the same organisation on different projects.

Key lessons learnt:

Staff need to be employed who have worked in the sector they liaise with, so that clients see their needs are understood.
