The function of Rawtalent is to address the development of entrepreneurial skills with students who may continue into self-employment or set up their own business.  

The activity also aims to introduce students to risk and uncertainty, and to help them develop an awareness and the skills necessary to set up as consultants (either individually or as a team).

The activity described below involves final year undergraduate design students from the Sir John Cass department of art, media and design, London Metropolitan University.

The TVC Scheme is one that takes innovators from first principles through to commercialisation. The company ceases to be a Virtual Company when funding is received. At that point it becomes a real company.

Imperial Innovations – Commercial lead

The technology identified is an enzyme catalyst that is capable of generating electricity from weak gloucose solutions – essentially generating power from sugary water (or blood).  This represents a novel model for a “bio fuel cell” – and if adopted could represent cheap and environmentally friendly source of fuel.

Fuel cells offer a better way of producing electricity and heat than traditional power generating products. Fuel cells are highly efficient, quiet and produce low emissions - making it possible for everyone to move to a more secure and sustainable energy world.

Ceres is a product development company specialising in small scale distributed power generation using intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells. A single fuel cell is the basic building block of a fuel cell power generator; Ceres is developing low cost and robust fuel cells that will be combined into stacks capable of generating between 1kWe and 25kWe.

Businesses involved include (for example) development of digital interactive multimedia* and in niche publishing .

* (case study material may have been provided for one of the companies in an earlier round of requests from HEFCE, but the company has since moved forward in product launch, new product development, sales and marketing.)  

Our primary activity is delivering executive courses for creative entrepreneurs and internal courses on creative business/entrepreneurship for masters level students.

The Grid has been described as the next generation of the Internet.  It offers limitless computing power ‘on tap’, providing users with seamless access to network and computing resources without having to worry about their own processor power, memory or storage capacity – or the software needed to access data stored in a myriad of different databases. It achieves this by cleverly linking arrays of conventional computers which may be distributed around the world, and the use of ‘middleware’, which resolves any technical issues.
The Grid is already being used by the academic community to support ‘e-science’. Global science projects like the Large Hadron Collider at CERN would be unthinkable without the computing power provided the Grid – together with software which is capable of managing computational and data resource demands that would stump the single biggest supercomputer.
The University was quick to spot the potential of e-science. In the late 1990s the Dept of Physics created an array comprising 300 PCs and servers, and enabled them to share resources in a closely coupled way. This gave the University’s particle physicists more computing power than all the super-computers at CERN combined. By 2002, thanks to £1.25M from SRIF, the array encompassed nearly 2,000 PCs and servers and provided the physical infrastructure underpinning ‘ULGRID’ - the University’s own, cross-campus Grid.
In June 2003, the University enhanced its Grid capacity by installing a new, large-scale Dell high-performance computing cluster (HPCC) powered by Intel® Pentium® 4 processors. This created one of the largest supercomputer sites in the world at the time and is within the top half of the official TOP500 list today. The University expects to increase capacity again shortly to support the NW-GRID project which will promote e-science across the North West.
‘ULGRID’ is already being harnessed by University departments – most notably Physics, Geography, the School of Management and the LSTM – to support advanced scientific research.  This includes simulating the collision of particles to help determine the origins of the universe, and simulating and forecasting the spread of diseases like SARS and malaria.
